David Bakari
Your Local Expert & Chief Guide
Jambo! I am David Bakari. I was born and raised in the villages of Moshi, right at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. This mountain is not just my workplace; it is my home.
My Journey on the Mountain
Growing up, many families in my community faced severe poverty, and children frequently missed school. My parents and relatives sacrificed immensely to support me through university. However, with very few job opportunities available after graduation, I struggled to repay their sacrifice or support my community the way I had dreamed.
I saw countless young people in the same situation — hardworking, capable, but lacking the opportunity to earn a fair living.
That is why I started my journey on Kilimanjaro. I began at the very bottom, working as a porter carrying gear up the slopes. I learned the mountain inside and out, eventually earning my professional tour guide certification and licensing.
A Partnership for Change
After years of leading successful summits, I met Silviu. We realized we shared the exact same vision: to revolutionize how Kilimanjaro tours are run. With his support, we built KilimanjaroJoy.Travel to cut out the middlemen and create direct, sustainable jobs for our community, while providing world-class safety and service for our climbers.
